dinner

Tampopo Kitchen and Bar brings a joyous collision of Korean crunch and Japanese comfort to Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast.

Diners speak reverently about the Korean fried chicken: a shattering shell gives way to succulent meat, seasoned just so and impossible to stop picking at. It is the sort of plate that announces itself at the table - all crisp edges and aroma - and sets the tone for a meal with serious flavour.

Beyond the headline act, the kitchen leans into soul-warming staples.

Think chicken katsu draped in Japanese barbecue sauce and mayo over rice, or braised pork belly slow-cooked until wobbly and glossed with sweet, savoury sauce. Bowls of ramen arrive steaming in tonkotsu or shoyu, with comforting trimmings such as chashu pork, chicken or tempura prawns, while a speciality spicy beef noodle soup brings a lively kick. For grazing, takoyaki nods to street-side pleasures.

Space for dessert is well advised: crispy fried milk conceals a gooey centre ready for a pour of sweetened condensed milk, while an ice-cream puff provides a hot-cold contrast to perfection.

The mood stays easy and genuine, with service that remembers the small things and parking that spares the fuss. Meals here linger by choice, guided by crunch, slurp and good company - not the clock.
