In Unley, Bird Yakitori Bar brings the flicker and fragrance of Japan’s street-side grills to Adelaide. There's a real focus on skewers kissed by binchotan charcoal, lending a clean, smoky character that lifts every bite without overpowering.

Meanwhile, the kitchen pairs precision with comfort. Lightly breaded oysters and piping-hot takoyaki open the palate, while delicate agedashi tofu in rich dashi broth speaks to a reverence for tradition.

Over the coals, expect chicken done many ways - tender thigh, gently charred heart, and a juicy meatball - alongside succulent scallop and squid skewers.

Beyond that, room remains for homely favourites: teriyaki chicken with a lacquered sheen, okonomiyaki in all its savoury glory, aburi salmon over rice, and golden panko-crumbed tonkatsu.

Sushi rolls run from a California tobiko roll to unagi wrapped neatly in nori, before desserts segue to warabimochi or a classic affogato.

To complement the feast, refreshing beverages are chosen to play in harmony, underlining the perfume of the embers.

The mood's inviting and unhurried, a place to graze, sip and linger as the grill glows - perfect for a relaxed lunch or dinner. Pull up a seat, follow the smoke, and let the fire take a skewer or two for a spin!
