Tucked into Adelaide’s CBD, Concubine leans into the pleasures of spice, smoke and slow time. Its kitchen moves between the flash of the wok and the hush of a long braise, tilting classic Chinese techniques toward a broader Southeast Asian palette. The result is a rhythm of sweet, sour and savoury, with the odd citrusy lift or peppercorn tingle to sharpen the senses.
Small beginnings set the tone: Peking duck bao with cool cucumber and hoisin, and salt and pepper squid brightened by chilli and spring onion. From there, the tempo builds. Kung Pao chicken crackles with Szechuan chilli and cashew, while a wok-fried ginger beef tenderloin threads mushrooms and seasonal vegetables through its glossy heat.
Curries bring warmth and perfume: roasted duck curry finds a tropical counterpoint in lychee and pineapple, and Angus beef curry folds potato and peanut into a comforting, earthy embrace. Slow-braised stalwarts show their depth, from pork belly in dark soy to beef cheek mellowed by vegetables and black bean sauce. Local notes chime in too, with South Australian prawns kissed by lime-infused salt and Sarawak pepper, and tofu dusted in Murray pink salt.
Whether a swift bite or a lingering spread, Concubine invites sharing, conversation and a little spice-led escapism. Pull up a chair and follow the aroma; curiosity, after all, makes the best condiment.
