Think you know Vietnamese cooking? Think again. At Southern Star you can discover lesser known dishes as well as those all-time favourites.

Right on the waterfront on Terrace Road, expect to be dazzled by views over the glistening Swan River and Langley Park. Inside, it’s a celebration of all things Vietnamese, with coolie hats on full display, paintings of Vietnamese symbols and beautiful wooden hatching decorating the walls.

If you’re after a culinary adventure, look no further than their prawn’s bird nest, a crispy noodle dish with prawns and vegetables or keep it local with their whole barramundi fillet. Their charcoal chicken is a lot more delicious than it sounds and their beef cashew nut dish is perfect for those spicy thrill seekers. With chicken, pork, beef, seafood, duck and vegetable dishes galore, it just comes down to which fabulous flavours you fancy.

With a diverse drinks menu, all you need to do is sit back, relax and soak in the views.

The service staff were very accommodating with our arrival and checked up on us a couple of times during our meal to make sure things were ok. The food was good, more Asian fusion than traditional Vietnamese. The atmosphere was pleasant, easy to carry on conversation. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable meal out.

Had a great experience dinning at Southern star Vietnamese. We were greeted by very pleasant & friendly floor staff. Everyone in our group really enjoyed their meal. It's a real pity they don't do tea or coffee. happy to sell dessert though.

Great variety of food and the restaurant was very busy. I ordered the Pho which was nice but personally lacked a lot of flavour. My friends opted for the Nasi Goreng which was nice and the Beef Maker you own Wok with Basil sauce which was a favourite. Would return and try more of the menu.

Really great atmosphere. Nice quiet music. Good friendly table service. . I ordered Laksa soup. Plenty of seafood. Followed by chicken satay. Again well prepared Main course was ginger fish. A nice piece of Barramumdi with plenty of salad. The mojjito drink was also great No problem getting the 50% First Table discount. All in all a great experience Will go again

Southern star restaurant was easy to locate as we walked our way from Hay Street with the help of Google Map.

The setting is clean and neat with pleasant soft music that was not too loud to abrupt conversation.

We reached there about 15 minutes earlier than the reservation time and the staff welcomed us without hesitation. The staff were friendly, and they were always around offering to help and checking to make sure everything is all right.

Our dishes took more than 30 minutes to be served unfortunately, and some of the other tables that reached the restaurant after us already got their food. We addressed this to the staff and they quickly checked with the kitchen to follow-up. It was probably a tiny messed up and they got the remaining dishes prepared within 15 minutes. The staff sincerely apologized for the delay multiple times and that makes the overall experience great again.

Food was tasty and not too salty for us. The portion may be a bit small for some people if you take account to its original price but it is definitely worth it after first table discount.

This was our first "first table" booking and the experience was awesome. For those who haven't tried out first table yet, we urge you to give it a try!

Restaurant was easy to find and there is plenty of street parking available, however there was also a concert on at the concert hall on the night that we attended, so parking was limited which was no fault of the Restaurant. Staff were Friendly, Helpful and Plentiful, nothing was too much trouble. We attended on a Friday night along with a handful of other diners, so not too much noise. The setting is very plain but clean and tidy. Food was Hot, Fresh and Flavorsome. There were 4 of us dining and we chose the Spring rolls and Chicken Sate sticks for entree, followed by Chicken Fried Rice, Shaking Beef (steak melted in your mouth), Kwai Teow and Sate Chicken tenderloins. We were thankful for the half price on food ,as pricing was a bit above average we thought. However we would certainly go again as there is more on the menu to try out.

Nice location, busier than most places on a Tuesday night but the service was very quick. Pork skewers were excellent. Fish cakes weren't my favourite texture. Sizzling beef had a lot of flavour and was delicious. Claypot duck was pretty good.

A lovely meal with a lovely view :)
Service was attentive. The dish which stood out for us would have to be the roasted duck and lychee in red curry sauce. It was pretty spicy but we love it. The rice paper rolls were beautifully presented.

Overall we did have an enjoyable experience at the restaurant.

Food: The duck curry that was mentioned in different reviews was really good! Portion size was reasonable. We ordered the salad which was quite nice, be warned that there is chilli in it which was a little too spicy for myself (I'm sure you can opt not to have it but it wasn't listed on the menu). Pho was nice as well, pretty average. Fried rice as a good portion however was a little oily, didn't have too much of the 'smokey' flavour.

Service: I guess this was the slight let down. To us it appeared as an average night as probably less than half of the restaurant was occupied (we did note that there were delivery drivers picking up orders now and again). We had to wait for a while get service during our meal such as refilling our tea pot, to get extra bowls, to order extra food. Staff seem to be able to just walk past your table without hearing you, we had to go up to the counter a few times to actually get service. Staff were generally friendly but I think this could be addressed for a smoother service.

Environment: You can definitely see their awards all over the walls. I think we were slightly put off as it took a while for staff to clear up after previous tables around us and staff were just wiping the table contents to the floor.

I would go back again and give it another go, but probably not my first choice if it wasn't for the special discount through first table. Shame as food was pretty good.

We keep coming back because the food and the experience are both wonderful!

I have coeliac disease and they had a dedicated gluten free menu. I loved the ginger fish. The rice paper rolls were bland but maybe becuase they were gluten free.
Nice venue with views out to the river.
Prompt service without being intrusive.
Will definitely go again.
Easy to get to for after work dinner catch up with a friend. Great that First Table is at 6.30pm.
