dinner

In Fitzroy, Chicano Taqueria channels the sun-soaked swagger of Southern California through a distinctly Melbourne lens. The room hums with vibrant, cosy energy, anchored by an open kitchen where corn tortillas are pressed to order. Come the weekend, the evening kitchen keeps the flavour flowing and the mood easy.

On the plate, street-style favourites arrive with bold, bright punctuation. Tacos might pair honey and chipotle chicken with guacamole and pico de gallo, or go for carnitas with smoked pineapple salsa and a citrusy crunch. Empanadas nod to Peru with pork, caramelised onion and braised orange, while barbacoa beef finds depth alongside chipotle-braised beans. Quesadillas ooze an Oaxaca cheese blend around hickory-smoked chicken or carne asada, made for sharing and swift return visits.

Freshness cuts through the richness in a strawberry ensalada with mandarin, Tajin and crunchy ancho almonds. For a sweet landing, think mole chocolate cake layered with dulce de leche buttercream, or a vegan mango cheesecake brightened by ginger rice pudding and passionfruit coulis.

Whether it’s a casual bite or a night out, this is a lively spot for sharing, sipping and staying up late. Gather your crew, follow the sizzle from the open kitchen and make room for one more taco!
