Cuisine: Asian, Thai
Price Point: Mains from $15 - $35

Enjoy modern Thai cuisine at Bistro Mekong, located in Sydney’s Castlecrag.

This is the sister restaurant of the popular Mekong in Chippendale’s Kensington Street. Chef Tiw Rakarin heads up the kitchen team with a menu inspired by the countries that line the Mekong River.

While you can, of course, order your own dish, this food is designed to be shared – the best way to avoid food envy!

If you like bold flavours, make sure you try the Cambodian beef curry or the Thai barbecue chicken. If seafood whets your appetite, you can’t go past the restaurant’s signature dish: the royal amok curry, complete with king prawns, scallops, barramundi and clams.

There are vegetarian and gluten-free options available, and with dishes like dumpling and noodles on the menu, you’re bound to find something to please the kids.

A limited dessert menu is on offer, but the drinks are plentiful, whether you’re after a wine or a signature cocktail.

You can indulge in all this deliciousness in the bistro or in the trendy outdoor courtyard for an al fresco dining experience.

The food was absolutely delicious and one of the most flavorsome Vietnamese I have tasted. The shared entre was delicious and fresh tasting and the main as good as the entre. We will certainly be going back again. Thank you for a most enjoyable night.

Another one wonderful night out at Bistro Mekong. Introduced another couple of friends to this cut above eatery and they agreed the chef is superb.

We just loved this place. Food & service was excellent. Also, it was great that you could park underneath in the shopping village & just walk up the stairs. The restaurant is in an enclosed marquee which extends from the smaller cafe area. They have out door heaters as well. We will definitely be back.

A surprising gem on the North Shore. My Singaporean father hails from a world food capital and is a hard taskmaster when it comes to eating out, so having him praise the experience in all regards can be taken as of significance. A well-conceived menu that pleased the palate from beginning to end along with excellent service. Shall be returning soon!

The restaurant presented well, however, we were advised that we could not have any seafood dishes at the discounted price. I have checked and it does not state this as a condition on the site or the voucher. the food was tasty but the one waiter has a very bad odour and could not understand English. I ordered the curry duck which was stated on the menu as duck breast. I received a duck leg. I asked the waiter why it was a leg ....I'm still waiting for the reply. The food was very tasty but the experience was not. I cannot in all honesty recommend this 'Bistro' Very disappointing!

Disappointing experience.

Firstly, we chose to try this restaurant after checking out the menu and noting there were quite a few seafood options for one member of the party who can’t eat meat. On arrival we were promptly told that all seafood was full price, which was not mentioned at the time of booking. As there was minimal non meat options we ended up paying full price, we have used first table a number of times in the past and restrictions on the menu were always clearly outlined in the booking.

Secondly: Ordered a cocktail which specifically listed ‘passion fruit pulp’ in its ingredients, firstly it took nearly 30 minutes to be served, and secondly when I enquired about the ingredients which did not match the menu, I was told it was a ‘pre-mix from the market’, and the waitress pointed to the supermarket next door. I assume it was simply a sweet sparkling wine.

Finally; When we asked for the bill and it was finally delivered we had to take it inside to pay (after waiting 10 minutes) where we found the staff at the counter eating and chatting. The restaurant was not busy, and sadly the service was very underwhelming.

Whilst the food we ordered was good (not the cocktails!), it was a very poor experience and we wont be back.

It was my father’s 87th birthday celebration and hailing from Singapore with a discerning palate, this is one of his favourite places. Tantalising food and accommodating service, another great night out at Bistro Mekong, thank you.

This is a great local find. Wonderful food - try the amazing duck pancakes and slow cooked beef curry! Will definitely return.

Quiet restaurant so easy to have a conversation. Food used fresh produce and was a tasty fusion, especially enjoyed the eggplant tempura and crab rice paper rolls. Was reasonably priced and had easy parking, I would return!

The Pad Thai is one of the best ones we’ve had. The duck curry and satay chicken was also good. It was great value with the discount.

Pleasant evening with nice food. The name describes it well with a Mekong delta twist to Asian (Thai and Vietnamese cuisine). The setting is an outdoor enclosed (clear plastic) area of a low rise shopping precinct of Castlecrag - cosy and warm on a cool evening. Tables well spaced so not too noisy.

Will be back here and recommending it to all my friends, delicious food and nice casual atmosphere.

We have enjoyed many first tables but this wasn’t one of them! Duck pancakes... beautiful but everything else very disappointing. Only beef dish on menu was a curry. Our chicken pad Thai had just 4 pieces of chicken in it. Our crispy chicken with cashews was SO chewy ...so much batter.. and very little meat. Almost like it had been double fried. I wonder if they skimped on the dishes as we were First tables?

delicious food but service needs a bit of improvement - senior waiter was wearing a hoodie & younger waiter needs a lot more training

A great little place at the back of the plaza, with outdoor seating (so take a jumper or jacket in case chilly). Food did not disappoint - the duck pancakes were especially yummy and we enjoyed all our other dishes.

Bistro Mekong is a wonderful local restaurant. We shared two delicious entrees ... the squid and soft shell crab in paper rolls with a wonderful sauce. Both portions are very large.
Consequently, our red duck curry ( hot and delicious) and stir-fried crispy pork with greens were more than we could handle. But we did our best!
Thank you for our First Table

We were able to choose any table.
We have eaten there before and the food has not lost its lustre and is as delicious as ever.
All our wishes were accommodated with a friendly smiler.

Wow what a hidden little gem that I wish I’d discovered earlier! The food was so tasty and reasonably priced too. Thoroughly enjoyed the tasting plate entree which gave my husband and I a sneak taste of 4 delicious entree options. The mains (red duck curry and sizzling roast pork) were just as scrumptious we wanted to lick the bowls! Wasn’t an overly busy night so service was efficient (only small issue was having to ask for 2 wine glasses 7 mins after arriving for our BYO wine that was put on the table when we first sat down. Not a biggie and we are definitely keen to return soon and try some other items on the menu. The First Table promotion made the evening even better!

Quality food and a good variety. Steamed Barramundi was excellent as were the entrees. Although dining is outdoors it was still warm and was in a tent like structure - would be even better in summer.

Great food and nice staff, we would definitely return.

A diverse and varied.
For starters, the mixed plate ($26 for 2) was plentiful and delicious. The deep fried eggplant with pork floss was pleasant.

We ordered 3 mains between the 3 of us. Pork belly, Saigon chicken curry (Fabulous!) with roti, and prawns.

Not too many vegetarian options, and I’m sure they would accommodate.
