A respect for traditional cooking methods and sustainable food is well and truly alive at the Mediterranean-inspired Mercado Restaurant.

The dining room is elegant and stylish with white walls, polished dark tables and the perfect blend of ambient lighting. While it’s suited for a group, it also makes a divine date place thanks to the stylish setting and the buzzing atmosphere. And, given its Ash Street location, it makes a fabulous choice for a pre-theatre meal.

And what a meal you’ll have. Chef Jason Dean’s passion for food is celebrated in the traditional cooking techniques used by the kitchen team. Inhouse meat curing, animal butchery, bread-baking and preserving are all done on-site, resulting in a menu that truly features some of the best and freshest ingredients you’ll find in Sydney.

The dishes themselves are seasonal, with Mercado working closely with local small growers and producers to create food that tastes sensational and heroes the produce.

The food is perfect for sharing, with Spanish-style tapas plates divided into smaller, medium and large selections. Mercado is a licensed restaurant, with wine, beer, spirits and cocktails all available.

Great atmosphere, great food, great wine, and most of all great staff and service. They knew the menu and they knew their wine so they were able to give intelligent advice about our choices. Would definitely go again. 2 thumbs up.

We had a great time at Mercado having pre-Opera dinner, was a bit of a rush to get on time, we explained our Server that we are in a rush, he advised chef and everything was served right on time, Lamb was to die for, great Empanadas and scallops, spiced cauliflower, foie grah wasnt really a foie grah but more parfait but nevertheless great taste and presentation, all and all we had a great time, nice ambient music, and facilities, highly recommend!

Mercado is a fantastic choice for dinner. We had the chefs tasting menu and everything served to us was absolutely delicious. Highlights were definitely the pumpkin paella and the chocolate gelato for dessert. The staff were also very helpful and accomodating making sure we were finished in time for our show at the opera house.

Me and my partner had an enjoyable time here. Food was very tasty, we shared a few dishes as this was the theme of this Spanish style restaurant. The Combination small plates certainly filled us up and Mixed with decent glass of wine we left feeling very satisfied. Recommend highly

We enjoyed our ladies night at Mercado a lot!

The food was great, little details and great quality, very tasty!
We had the pumpkin paella everyones raves about - we loved it !
the lamb : i'm vegetarian but my friends loved it !
the scallops : 4 pieces, really well cooked, yum!!!
maple glazed halumi: probably my favorite number 2 after the paella
roasted cauliflower : good
fries: almost too classic compared to the rest, our own fault i guess :)

What could improve for us:
I wouldn't call the "large plates to share" large , it really gives you the impression you have ordered a lot, but then you get slightly disappointed when the plate comes in, which is a shame because it is really really good !!!!
With 4 "large and mains to share" and 2 sides we were ok, but far from full

Also, you could just let people know that with the First Table (arriving at 5:45pm) you have to order by 6pm to get the discount - we were waiting for our last guest, had a first look but hadn't fully decided yet, and 5min before 6pm we were told we had to order by 6pm to get the discount. We totally understand why, but for the next people please let them know straight away -:) this would help avoiding the rush to order - or maybe even include it in the special conditions when booking, because this is the first time we see such a short time to order with the First Table.

Overall, great experience, we are glad we booked here, and we might come back with another First Table to try the rest of the menu :)

Thank you !!

The food was share style and really interesting and tasty. Loved the green peppers and the desert was a standout. Nice atmosphere with the room relatively full with early diners and the service was spot on.

Well presented tasty food with good atmosphere.

We had a 5.30pm booking, which was care of their ‘first table’ offer, the restaurant didn’t open their doors until 5.30pm, we had arrived 10 mins early and had to ‘hang around’ outside until they opened. The food was good but vegetarians beware as it is very meat orientated. That said the food was good, and we really liked the sharing aspect of the menu. We had starters and mains, but they had the table booked at again for 7pm, so we couldn’t stay for dessert which was a shame. The waitress was efficient but did make us feel we were being scolded, so the service could be improved. Prices were good, especially with the offer.

Very pleasant early evening meal on a warm day eating outside. The level of the music inside seemed too great to provide a pleasant experience. Service was prompt although one of our tapas dishes arrived after the main course. We had half a chicken but that was too much for 2 people. The sauces were pleasant but not that complex. The petit fours were a bit heavy. The chardonnay was a good match to the food. Good value for less than $60 before a show.

A little rushed to order however the food was on point . Absolutely love the lamb and flat bread with beans . Beautiful dishes . Chicken a little on the undercooked side for me personal preference can’t stand pink chickens . Service was lovely . Excellent selection of food and beautiful wines . Definitely go back .
