In the heart of South Yarra, Mr L’s Bar and Restaurant strikes a balance between polished glamour and relaxed conviviality. It is the sort of spot where the lighting flatters, the soundtrack hums, and plates arrive with just enough theatre to turn heads without stealing the conversation. The mood is chic and vibrant, a Melbourne original with a cosmopolitan wink.

The kitchen favours precision and indulgence in equal measure. Small pleasures set the tone: a grilled sourdough duo with wattle seed cultured brown butter, Peninsula goat’s curd and honey; Pacific oysters brightened with mignonette or an apple elderflower granita; a Western Australian lobster and sweet prawn roll crowned with Avruga caviar. From the grill, provenance takes centre stage in the Cape Grim scotch fillet and a Victorian grass-fed eye fillet, their richness lifted by seasonal accompaniments and a whisper of smoke.

Elsewhere, craft meets comfort. Think free-range duck breast sharpened with Davidson plum and blood orange, or goat’s cheese and sage cappelletti folded through roasted butternut squash purée and greens. Sides lean generous and moreish: duck fat kipfler potatoes and grilled broccolini with fermented chilli garlic sauce are built for sharing and lingering.

Perfect for a celebratory evening or an elevated midweek escape, Mr L’s invites diners to settle in, sip something grown-up, and savour the detail. Book a table, follow your appetite, and let the night unfurl with a little South Yarra sparkle.
