One minute you're wandering down the street minding your own business and the next you're gorging on modern Malaysian food, all thanks to La De Lah. Surely, this can't be a coincidence?
Of course not - at least, that would be an insult to Malaysian chef Eugene Lee who is the brains and tastebuds behind this bold eatery. It's both modern and traditional, harnessing the buzzing atmosphere of street food markets with picnic benches and a lively streetside patio whilst also staying true to Malaysia's centuries-old traditions and cooking methods. Visit them later in the evening, however, and you're in for a real treat as the whole place becomes flooded with red light, signalling that the night shifted up a gear!
But before we get there, let's start with some La De Lights that are the perfect appetite ticklers. Bao buns, spanner crab and chicken wings form the beginning of your Malaysian journey before you add some spice-fried quail and coconut turmeric cauliflower into the mix too. Just don't fill yourself on these plates; believe it or not, the best is yet to come.
On to La De Large now and here we have traditional offerings such as nam yee fried chicken, asam curry with local fish and nasi goreng brimming with anchovies, bean sprouts and, of course, sambal. Round off your evening with an ode to Australia with a jackfruit and passionfruit pavlova (Lee is firmly on Australia's side with that one), and peer downstairs to see what's happening. Those Asian-fusion cocktails have to be drunk after all...
