Cuisine: A La Carte, Ethical, Modern Australian
Price Point: Mains from $15 - $25

Sustainability and local ingredients are a recipe for success at contemporary dining establishment Pennys Ln.

Named after the Kings Cross street it’s located on, this restaurant is an oasis in the middle of the city with warm wooden tones and the golden glow of vintage-style lighting illuminating the space.

The menu changes daily, yet the focus on Australian-grown or produced content is always at the heart of the cuisine. Chef Claudio Morales, of Ash Street Cellar and Regatta fame, also prepares as many ingredients as he can from scratch, again celebrating that small producer ethos.

Meals include casual fare plates for one and dishes that are suited to sharing. The charcuterie is also not to be missed.

Classic cocktails and a large wine list are the perfect accompaniments to your meal, with local beers, spirits, aperitifs and digestifs on offer too.

And, if all this fabulous local produce isn’t enough to have you falling in love with the venue, the friendly and knowledgeable staff will finish the job.

Perfect from start to finish. The manager was so lovely and warm, the staff were very attentive and nice. The food was amazing! We ordered the crudo, the squid ink pasta, the steak, the kingfish, the banoffee pie and the parfait. They were all SO yummy. Cooked perfectly. My boyfriend and I will definitely be coming back and next time I’ll bring my parents! We live in the Potts Point area and this has to be one of the best restaurants around.

The best service we have received in Sydney potentially ever! Staff were insightful and beyond generous and we loved all of the little added bonuses that really added to a wonderful dining experience

The food and service was excellent and the location was quite convenient. The menu was small but still had a lot to offer and we didn't feel stunted for choice.

We had a lovely meal at Penny's Ln Wednesday night, my husband and I. Food is delicious - particularly enjoyed the chicken liver pate (parfait-like consistency) - delicious and must-try when I see it on a menu - and some morcon (chilli). I had a Poor Tom's Fool's Cut gin (to which I added tonic) which nearly buggered my night, LOL, at 52%. Again, delicious. Husband had a Pirate Life Port Lager.

We shared an entree because I was a bit full. Gorgeous beetroot with some salty chevre. With that we had a Mon Tout and Howard Park rose.

Next, after waiting some time so I could actually fit part of a main meal, between us we enjoyed the kingfish and the lamb. For me, the lamb was 50 grams too much but it was advertised as 200 grams (and I have lunch for today) - for the bigger eaters. I think slightly undercooked - it was perfectly seared but redder than pink but still lovely to eat. The kingfish lacked the juiciness we associate with the milky-white flesh of fish, so probably just a touch over (the lamb being just a touch under - maybe a timing thing on the night). The vegetable accompaniments on the plate were lovely, softer vegetables on the kingfish had seen heat only sparingly. Nothing wrong with them, but as a personal preference we would have preferred a bit more caramelisation. The thrice-cut chips were the disappointment. Soggy, with no crunch. Not sure what happened there because everything else was of a fairly high quality - maybe they were lost when we requested our meal to be delayed.

Because we waited for me to be able to eat the main, husband had a tweenie empanada which was delightful. With our mains, I had a Teusner grenache and husband had the Three Pond chardonnay.

Then, dessert. We shared that. We went for the house-made yoghurt parfait with blueberries, blueberry meringue and house-made honeycomb. That honeycomb! A Puppet Master Moscato (not Muscato as on the list) paired lip-smackingly with it the dessert.

The meal was topped-and-tailed with an ocean trout rillette on a cos leaf and a roasted strawberry pannacotta.

All round, worth the visit. Hope Pennys Ln does well. Seven months' young and could have a few more bums in seats. Get out there!

And lovely staff providing the service. Very helpful.
