Cuisine: Share Plates, Vietnamese
Price Point: Mains from $20 - $30

Inspired by his mother and Aunt's recipes, Bao Hoang opened Mama's Buoi, a restaurant that serves Vietnamese home-cooked food that feeds body and soul.

It might be tucked away down a laneway, but it's hard to walk by without a second glance. Imitating a traditional Vietnamese food market, this restaurant is bursting with bright colours, vibrant lights and the chitter-chatter of countless diners who have fallen in love with its casual dining style.

Dive right in with Mama's Beef Stir Fry, a hearty bowl of warming goodness. Straight from Ha Noi is chicken pho soup, from Saigon is beef pho soup and from the family recipe book is caramelised pork belly, ginger chicken curry and special crab fried rice. 'Special' is an understatement.

Mama's influence doesn't stop there; she sure liked a tipple or two. Mama's Mojito should get you into the party spirit and no doubt the Viet Express with nougat infused vodka (oh yes!) will see you through your journey from romantic Hanoi to bamboozling Saigon.

The food was fabulous!! We ordered the salt and pepper squid, ginger chicken stirfry, Vegetarian Pho soup then the chocolate brownie for dessert.. The entree and mains pretty much all came out at the same time, so if you're wanting to pace yourself, I would recommended ordering entrees first, eating that then ordering mains. The Pho soup was definitely fragrant and tasted devine - best Pho i've had!! The tofu in it was delicious!!

From a service perspective, when we arrived the waitress saw us but did not acknowledge us. We waited to be seated for a few minutes whilst she was behind the bar then eventually we went in and told her we had a reservation. She then promptly grabbed us menus and a table, so it was ok. After we had finished our entrees and mains, the waitress noticed we had finished eating however did not come over to clear the table or ask if we would like dessert - I had to call her over and ask her to do the above. I though it was a bit odd, as she was standing by our table watching us but did not come over to clear the table or check in on us. Lastly, when we went to pay, despite telling the waitress when we were seated we had a First Table reservation and showing her a paper copy of our reservation, the bill did not reflect the discount. It seemed the waitress at the register was completely unaware of what First Table was and the discount we were entitled to. Another staff member was called in to sort out our bill so all worked out in the end.

All in all, the food was amazing!! I think the service will get better as the staff become more aware of what First Table is and hopefully more aware of what customers are expecting of staff when dining at their establishment.

This Vietnamese Restaurant is located in postal lane off Bourke Street Mall and I never knew this lane existed.

Lovely atmospheric lane.

We tried various dishes which were quite delicious. Really enjoyed the crispy pork belly. Other disheswe tried included beef lemongrass stir fry, smokey eggplant and crab fried rice.
