A warm slice of Italy with a healthy dash of Fitzroy flair, Basta is THE place to go for home-cooked food from Sicily in a buzzy setting.

Owner Fabio Candolo wanted to capture the warmth and family vibe of his homeland’s food scene, which is why the front of house team his made up of his partner, Carrie, and a circle of close friends.

Get stuck into honest, delicious dishes such as antipasti, marinated sardines, slow-cooked ox tongue, grilled meat, mouth-watering vegetable sides and of course a sensational selection of pasta.

From lamb ragu to porcini mushroom ravioli, broccoli orecchiette to gnocchi smothered in melting burrata, they have the answer to your most decadent pasta dreams!

Spread over two floors, there’s enough room for any kind of gathering. There are cosy corners for a romantic evening, bar stools for friends wanting to catch up whilst watching the theatre of the kitchen and large tables for big family reunions.

Throw in a playful wine list and quite simply the best Aperol spritz this side of the Indian Ocean and you’ll begin to understand why Basta is full every night of the week.

So what are you waiting for? Gather your loved ones and tuck in!

This was such an amazing find, around the corner from the busy Brunswick St.
We had such a lovely night here, the service was great, the menu had so many options and the food and wine were delicious!
Will definitely be coming back

This restaurant was amazing! The food was incredible and we tried things we wouldn't normally (ox tongue!!). The waitress Maddie was incredible at recommending wines (definitely try 'Jazz' if you're a red fan) and pairings and was just all-round enjoyable. We will definitely be going back soon.

A lovely little neighbourhood restaurant, with a cosy feel, on the city fringe. We were seated at a window table with pleasant views down the street. The food was good and the service friendly. A great spot for dinner on a cold winter night.

Positives: The arancini balls and pork were excellent; the restaurant has an atmospheric setting in a renovated, old-style building.

Negatives: The seafood linguini came with barely any seafood. When we noted this with the staff, they were very defensive and seemed to suggest we were making it up and there was a problem with our attitude. The waitress had earlier told us there was only one serving of linguini left; we assume there may have been barely any seafood left, but the chef thought they could whip one last meal out of what was left. After complaining further, the waitress said she wouldn’t charge for the linguini if she took it away. The service went very much downhill from this point, the waitress being quite brisk, verging on rude. It was also extremely cold by the front window where we were told to sit, as the cold air seeped in and the heating is at the back of the restaurant.

Overall, not an enjoyable experience and would not recommend.
