Cuisine: Australian, Wine Bar
Price Point: Mains from $15 - $35

Tuck into fabulous Australian bistro food and craft beer at this hip hideaway in Ballarat.

The sister bar-cum-restaurant to Athletic Club Brewery, it combines the cosiness of a rustic pub with fashionable industrial features like exposed brickwork and raw metal wine racks.

Whether you choose to sit in the open plan restaurant or upstairs on the roomy terrace, you’ll be served all your bistro favourites such as burgers, ribs and steaks, as well as a few contemporary Australian surprises.

Head chef Chris Watt has a flair for gourmet salads and mouthwatering bar snacks. Think house-smoked sausage with grainy mustard, fluffy doughnuts stuffed with brisket and crispy potatoes loaded with beans and barbeque sauce. They’re great value, too…

Beer lovers will be in heaven, with no less than eight options on tap, while the wine list showcases the best of local producers.

We had the whole place to ourselves before the weekend rush. Our 3 year old loves the toy area and the range of beer always delights my husband.

First time user of this app so was guided by their listing of restaurants. Freight Bar & Restaurant ended up ticking all the boxes. Had a great industrial feel as befitted its name & location next to the rail line. Nick looked after us for the evening and was fabulous. Provided great service, made some good suggestions with our drinks and also had a great personality sharing some local stories. Food was tasty and servings generous. As a first we tried the fried pickles... different.. also had the calamari which was delicious aling with the stuffed chicken breast and chicken burger special. All yum! To top off our visit, they also had live entertainment. We were treated to Matty Chaps who was fabulous. Played covers and was getting the whole area involved. Would definitely go back and also recommend to our friends. Of course the sweetener was the trip to the till at the end of the evening with our meal cost halved. Great night!

Our first time eating here but it definitely won't be our last. Fantastic choice, scrumptious food, great kids play area. Highly recommend.

Delicious! From the first bite to the last. Obliging staff also let us share two mains so we could sample more of the menu. If you crave spiced sauces and meats from the South, the meat plate is a terrific choice. Our other meal was calamari, fresh, tasty on a Morrish mixed salad. You won’t be disappointed!
